USA Triathlon - USA Triathlon November 13, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon has announced two additional qualifying events for the 2009 ITU Duathlon Short Course World Championship in Concord, N.C.
In addition to the 2009 USAT Duathlon National Championship in Richmond, Va., on April 25-26, duathletes can qualify for worlds at the Desert Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., on Feb. 24 or the Apple Duathlon in Sartell, Minn., on May 24.
Twelve spots per age group, rolling down to 16th place, will be up for grabs at the USAT Duathlon National Championship. The Desert Classic and Apple Duathlon each will have three spots per age group, rolling down to sixth place.
The 2009 USAT Duathlon National Championship is being held in Richmond for the second straight year. Last year, 450 duathletes from around the country competed in the event as pros, age group athletes, sport racers, juniors and youth racers.
“We’re excited to have three qualifying events for 2009 as we build toward a sole qualifying event in 2010 – the Duathlon National Championship – which will allow for more head-to-head competition for coveted world championship slots among the best athletes in the country,” said Jeff Dyrek, USA Triathlon’s National Events director.

Reading between the lines is not real hard to du here. Duathlon is in trouble du to a numbers issue. In the past 25 years I have done fewer than 5 du's, and never anything of the national or world level. 2009 will change that. I need to look at new challenges and new venues to "fuel my multisport lifestyle". I will du triathlons in 2009 but i am adding du's to the mix, starting with nationals and hopefully on to worlds. As for the numbers issue, USAT needs to think way "ouside the box" when they plan this event. "Same old, same old" ain't gonna cut it. A hook needs to be created to drag in fresh blood and entice "tri's to try a "du". How about having corporate sponsors for each age group. Put the finisher medals on the shelf and give products from the vendors as prizes. Or, give travel vouchers form airlines, bike passes, tires, nutrition packages, don't give me another t-shirt - the basement is full and Goodwill say's no more. Give 50% entry fees to everybody west of the Mississippi. Free entgries to participants from California, Oregon, Washington and Indiana. Or, how about a gift certificate from national restuarant chains. I'm full of ideas (and ?) call me! USAT - ARE YOU GETTING THE MESSAGE! I'm going to be there. Now do something to make the other 999 want to come.
