Gravel Triathlon & Duathlon National Champions Crowned at 2024 USA Triathlon Gravel Nationals, Hosted by The Dirty Mitten in Michigan

MIDDLEVILLE, Mich.  Hundreds of gravel multisport athletes raced on Sept. 21-22 in Middleville, Michigan, at the 2024 USA Triathlon Gravel National Championships, hosted in partnership with The Dirty Mitten, Michigan’s largest gravel triathlon event. 

Located in between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, the race took place at the YMCA’s Camp Manitou-Lin, with athletes racing for age group national titles in Sprint and Olympic Distance Gravel Triathlon and Gravel Duathlon National Championships. Athletes started with a swim in Lake Barlow, followed by a gravel trail bike and trail run throughout Barry County.  

The Olympic Distance Duathlon consisted of a 3.1-mile run, 29-mile gravel bike and a 6.2-mile run, while the Olympic Distance Triathlon was composed of a 1500-meter swim, 29-mile gravel bike and a 6.2-mile run. 

Athletes racing in the Sprint Distance Duathlon competed in a 3.1-mile run, 14-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run and the Sprint Distance Triathlon completed a 750m swim, 14-mile bike and 3.1-mile run. 

Gravel riding is an increasingly popular form of cycling that combines elements of road- and mountain-biking, and consisting mostly of riding over unpaved, non-technical roads.  

Olympic Distance Gravel Triathlon Nationals 

In the men’s Olympic Distance Gravel Triathlon National Championships, Brian Sharda (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed first in a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, 1 seconds. He was followed in by Christopher Mosier (Peachtree City, Ga.) at 2:38:48, winning the M45-49 age group title. Christopher Schmidt (Evanston, Ill.) took third in a time of 2:42:26, winning his 50-54 age group title. 

Kirsten Kurokowa (McKinney, Texas) ran across the finish line in 3:08:16, earning the women’s overall national title and the 40-44 age group title. Lindsay Long (Wilmington, Del.) placed second in 3:12:21 and Katy Stone (Perry, Mich.) placed third in 3:18:15. Long and Stone both won their age group national titles, 35-39 and 50-54, respectively. 

Rebecca Bell (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) won the Athena 39 & Under national title in 3:58:44, while Elizabeth Holdenburg (Brighton, Mich.) won the Athena 40-54 national title. 

William Jankowski (Avon, Ind.) won the Clydesdale 60+ national title in 4:06:04 and Derk Zwart (Grandville, Mich.) won the national title for the Clydesdale 40-59 age group in 4:32:23. 

Olympic Distance Gravel Duathlon Nationals 

In the men’s Olympic Distance Gravel Duathlon National Championship, Steven Worth (Lake Forest, Ill.) took the tape in a time of 2:47:55, out-sprinting Ryan Ohl (Indianapolis, Ind.) by just four seconds, with Ohl clocking in at 2:47:59. Both Worth and Ohl won their age groups, 40-59 and 39 & Under, respectively. Paul Greenberg (Westport, Conn.) placed third, just one minute behind in a time of 2:48:12, and also won his 60+ age group. 

Lauren Leblanc (Clarkston, Mich.) placed first in the women’s Olympic Distance Duathlon National Championship in a time of 3:33:14, winning the overall and 40-59 national titles. Following Leblanc was Joann Cranson (Lake Odessa, Mich.) in 3:36:01 and Chris Farrell (New Lenox, Ill.) in 4:17:25. Cranson also won the F60-64 age group.

Sprint Gravel Triathlon Nationals 

In the Sprint Gravel Triathlon National Championship, Todd Buckingham (Belmont, Mich.) crossed the finish line first in a time of 1:12:21, followed closely by Hagen Zein (Northville, Mich.) in 1:13:14. Pete Bolen (Dexter, Mich.) placed third in a time of 1:15:47. Both Zein and Bolen won their age groups, M30-34 and M60-64, respectively. 

Lindsay Delorme (South Haven, Mich.) took first overall in the women’s race in a time of 1:19:59. Just over a minute behind, Megan James (Portage, Mich.) finished second at 1:21:47 and Ashley Hankamp (Coopersville, Mich.) placed third in a time of 1:26:34. James also won her age group, F50-54 and Hankamp came in second in the F40-44 age group behind Delorme. 

In the Clydesdale division, Brian Manatt (Grinnell, Ia.) finished first in a time of 1:27:45. He was followed in by R. Babcock (Byron Center, Mich.) at 1:32:32 and Todd Tolbert (Okemos, Mich.) in 1:57:21. Manatt and Babcock also received national titles for the Clydesdale 40-59 and 39 & Under divisions. 

Natalie Rowe (Kalamazoo, Mich.) won the overall Athena title in addition to the Athena 40-54 title in a time of 1:39:30. Carolyn Peurach (Kalamazoo, Mich.) placed second in a time of 1:41:39, followed by third-place finisher Michelle Mathewson (Bellevue, Mich.) in 1:43:17. Both Peurach and Mathewson placed first and second in the 39 & Under division. 

Sprint Gravel Duathlon Nationals  

The men’s Sprint Gravel Duathlon National Championship was a race between athletes on each end of the age spectrum. Twenty-one-year-old Lance Bultman (Rockford, Mich.) placed first in a time of 1:24:18, while 59-year-old Eric Sutherland (State College, Penn.) placed second in a time of 1:31:06, winning his age group. Terry Sensiba took third place in a time of 1:36:12, winning the M55-59 age group. 

Jana Shavalier (Wyoming, Mich.) earned the overall national title in the women’s Sprint Duathlon Gravel National Championship in a time of 1:49:30. Fighting until the finish, Kristina Colby (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed second, just 17 seconds after Shavalier, in a time of 1:49:47. April Doezema (Belding, Mich.) took third in 2:09:06, winning her 45-49 age group. Shavalier and Colby also placed first and second in the 35-39 age group. 

PC Open 

USA Triathlon also offers a PC Open Division, available to athletes with a physical, visual or neurological impairment. Larry Seidman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) clocked in at 4:33:58 in the Olympic Distance Gravel Triathlon and Christine Wodke (Milwaukee, Wisc.) finished the Sprint Distance Gravel Triathlon in a time of 2:23:43.
