USA Triathlon Announces 2023 Triathlon, Duathlon and Cross Athletes of the Year, Presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo – USA Triathlon today announced the 22 winners of the 2023 Triathlon, Cross Triathlon and Duathlon Athlete of the Year Awards.

Triathlon and Duathlon categories feature Male and Female divisions for Open (overall), ages 15-19, Masters, Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters, while Cross Athlete Awards include Overall Male and Female categories. 

Award winners were presented at the 2024 USA Triathlon Foundation "Celebration of Sport" Gala, presented by TicketSocket on Sept. 12 in Atlantic City. The USA Triathlon Foundation Gala raised a record-breaking $215,000 to support the Foundation's mission of encouraging youth participation, inspiring pathways to access and inclusion, and igniting Olympic and Paralympic dreams.

USA Triathlon also recognized the Coaches and Race Director of the Year Awards and Multisport Lifestyle winners. All awards are presented by the U.S. Air Force Special Warfare.

MALE OPEN TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Benjamin Stone (Indianapolis, Indiana) 

Stone went undefeated in 2023, winning all seven individual races competed. He won both the Olympic and Sprint Distance overall titles at 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and added titles in both Aquabike and Aquathlon at 2023 USA Triathlon Multisport National Championships.

FEMALE OPEN TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Katie Lance (Knoxville, Tennessee) 

In her second full season as a triathlete, Katie Lance earned a third-place age group finish at IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga and had two first-place finishes in her age group at 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee. Lance went on to win her age group at the IRONMAN 70.3 Florida, also getting second overall. After competing at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Finland, Lance earned her pro card and began competing as a professional in 2024. 

MALE 15-19 TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Ben Resler (Greensboro, North Carolina)  

The 19-year-old is making big statements in triathlon as an up-and-coming junior athlete. In 2023, Resler made 11 podiums in 11 races, notably getting first and second in the Olympic and Sprint Distance races in the 15-19 age group at 2023 USA Triathlon National Championships.  

FEMALE 15-19 TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Raphaela Lima (Weston, Florida) 

At the top of her age group, Lima made it onto 12 podiums in 2023, with five first-place finishes, seven second-place finishes, and one third-place finish. Lima won her age group at 2023 Multisport Nationals, and also came in second place overall in the Sprint Distance at Youth and Junior Nationals.  

MALE MASTERS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Robert Skaggs (Dunedin, Florida) 

Skaggs competed for Team USA at World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Hamburg, taking second in the M55-59 age group, and was notably the first American over 40 through the finish line. On home soil, Skaggs won his age group in both the Super Sprint Time Trial and the Standard Aquathlon at Multisport Nationals Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Hamburg. In the U.S., Kozlowski placed first in his age group at 2023 Multisport Nationals in two races. 

FEMALE MASTERS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Kirsten Sass (McKenzie, Tennessee) 

Also winning the Duathlon Masters Female Award, Sass has long been a force in multiple multisport formats. At 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals, Sass won the 40-44 age group in both the Olympic and Sprint Distance Triathlons.  

MALE GRANDMASTERS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Tony Schiller (Whitefish, Montana) 

Schiller won his 65-69 age group in both Sprint and Olympic-distance triathlon at Nationals in Milwaukee, giving him the Grand Masters Triathlon title. On the international stage, Schiller placed second in his age group at World Championships in Pontevedra, leading the way for Team USA.

TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Steph Popelar (Elizabeth, Colorado) 

Also winning the Duathlon Grand Masters Female Award, the 56-year-old Popelar continues to be an exceptional multisport athlete. Popelar went undefeated in her age group in all nine races in 2023. Representing Team USA, Popelar won two races at World Triathlon Age-Group Championships Pontevedra and one race at Sprint & Relay Championships Hamburg. 

MALE GREAT GRANDMASTERS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Rick Kozlowski (San Diego, California) 

Kozlowski made the podium on all four races in 2023, with a first-place finish at World Triathlon Age Group Championships Pontevedra and a second-place finish at World 

FEMALE GREAT GRANDMASTERS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Missy LeStrange (Visalia, California) 

LeStrange continues to dominate the 70-74 age group, going undefeated in all six races in 2023. She won her age group at the 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii and the 2023 IRONMAN World Championships. She also had success in short-course, winning both the Sprint and Olympic distances at USA Triathlon Nationals. 

Michael Fowler (Wichita, Kansas) 

Fowler competed at 2023 Multisport Nationals in Irving, Texas, placing fourth in his 35-39 age group in the Super Sprint Duathlon, Sprint Duathlon and Standard Duathlon races. Internationally, he competed at World Championships in Ibiza and finished 26th and 21st overall in the Sprint and Standard Duathlon races. 

FEMALE OPEN DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Dominique Stasulli (Boulder, Colorado) 

Owner and Head Coach at Zeal Endurance Coaching, Stasulli is a force to be reckoned with. Her first-place age group titles in the Sprint Duathlon and Super Sprint Duathlon at 2023 Multisport Nationals, followed by a second-place age group title in the Standard Duathlon earned her a first-place duathlon national ranking for 2023. 

MALE 15-19 DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR  

Gavin Adkins (Haverhill, Massachusetts) 

The 18-year-old Adkins won his age group in all eight duathlons he raced in 2023, including three overall wins at King Pine Tri & Duathlon, The Wolf Tri & Duathlon and the DAM Sprint Tri and Duathlon. Internationally, he won his age group win at World Championships in Ibiza. 

FEMALE 15-19 DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR  

Mia Mancilla (Pine Crest, Florida) 

Mancilla finished the 2023 season as the No. 1 ranked Junior duathlete, with wins at CLASH Endurance Miami 2023 and Las Olas/A1A Triathlon Fort Lauderdale. 

MALE MASTERS DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR  

Stephen Eles (Boulder, Colorado) 

A Team USA athlete, Eles finished second and third in the Super Sprint and Long-Distance Duathlons at World Championships in Ibiza, in addition to a first and second place age group finish in the Super Sprint and Standard-Distance Distance Duathlons at 2023 Multisport Nationals. 

FEMALE MASTERS DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR  

Kirsten Sass (McKenzie, Tennessee) 

Also taking home the Triathlon Masters Female Award, Sass also had a dominant year in duathlon. She took home the overall and age group titles in Standard Duathlon and Draft-Legal Sprint Duathlon races at 2023 Multisport Nationals, adding a second place overall and first place age group title in the Super Sprint Duathlon. 

MALE GRANDMASTERS DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Michael Berryman (West Linn, Oregon) 

Berryman placed second in his age group at the Sprint Duathlon at 2023 Multisport Nationals and the Cherrylake Farm Races. Additionally, he placed first in the Sprint Duathlon at World Championships in Ibiza and the Standard Duathlon at Hagg Lake Triathlon Festival. 

ANNE VIVIANI FEMALE GRANDMASTERS DUATHLETE
OF THE YEAR 

Steph Popelar (Elizabeth, Colorado) 

Popelar is also an accomplished triathlete, winning the Karen McKeachie Grand Masters Triathlete of the Year award. In duathlon, she went undefeated in her age group in all four duathlon races in 2023, including world titles in short and intermediate duathlon at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza, Spain. 

MALE GREAT GRANDMASTERS DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Ron Wightman (Wellsville, New York) 

Wightman went undefeated in his age group in 2023, winning the Sprint and Standard Duathlon national titles in the 75-79 age group at Multisport National Championships. He represented Team USA in Ibiza, winning world titles in both the Sprint and Standard Duathlons. 

FEMALE GREAT GRANDMASTERS DUATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Ruth King (Ambler, Pennsylvania) 

King won both the Great Grand Masters Duathlon and Aquathlon awards for her achievements in 2023. At the World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza, King won the 70-74 age group in Sprint Duathlon. She also won the age group titles in Sprint and Super Sprint Duathlon at Multisport National Championships. 

MALE CROSS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Michael Dorr (Avon, Colorado) 

Now a three-time Cross Athlete of the Year Award winner, Dorr is no stranger to cross triathlon competition. Dorr won his 45-49 age group title at both XTERRA USA Championships and XTERRA Oak Mountain in 2023, earning him a first-place national ranking. Dorr also won Cross Athlete of the Year honors in 2021 and 2019. 

FEMALE CROSS TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Deanna McCurdy (Littleton, Colorado) 

McCurdy now has four Cross Triathlete of the Year honors in her stellar career. During the 2023 season, McCurdy went four for four, winning her age group at four different races, notably XTERRA Portland, ATX, Oak Mountain and Cameron Park, giving her a first-place national ranking.
