Paris 2024 was a summer to remember for U.S. Olympians, highlighted by a silver medal in the Mixed Relay!
Seth Rider, Taylor Spivey, Morgan Pearson and Taylor Knibb will forever be remembered for the Olympic silver medal they delivered in dramatic fashion at the Paris 2024 Olumpic Games.
The grit. The fight. The determination. There was no stopping the U.S. Mixed Relay Team in Paris.
Days before, each athlete had indvidual races that left them disappointed. But all of them - with the support of their U.S. teammate Kirsten Kasper - lifted each other up in the days leading to the Mixed Relay. Pearson led a watch party of the classic sports movie, Miracle, based on the inspirational true story about the 1980 U.S. men's hockey team whose gold medal victory over the heavily favored Soviet team was dubbed the "Miracle on Ice."
The U.S. Mixed Relay team channeled that same underdog mentality.
Rider - the lifelong triathlete who first raced triathlon as a 6-year-old - set the tone by diving into the Seine and racing with no fear before tagging to his training squad partner Taylor Spivey.
Spivey, an NCAA collegiate swimmer turned triathlete, displayed her trademark consistency and teancity, bringing the team into medal contention.
Pearson, the hero from the Tokyo 2020 silver medal-winning Mixed Relay team, ran his heart out, setting up Knibb for an epic anchor leg that will be talked about for ages.
Knibb stormed through the water, moving the U.S. into third place, emerging out of the Seine 23 seconds back of Great Britain's Beth Potter and 12 seconds back of Germany's Laura Lindemann. The trio exited transition two together. It would all come down to the 1.8k run.
In an epic sprint down the blue carpet on the historic Pont Alexandre III bridge, Knibb just out-leaned Potter to the finish - just 0.005 of a second separating silver and bronze.
Incredible teamwork for an incredible result.
The silver medal is the second Olympic silver for the U.S. in the Mixed Relay.
Pearson said afterward he hopes the thrilling race inspires a new generation to race triathlon. We couldn't agree more.
