USA Triathlon Announces the Inaugural Aquabike and Aquathlon Athletes of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced the inaugural class of the USA Triathlon Aquabike and Aquathlon Athletes of the Year, presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, honoring the nation's top age group swim-bike (Aquabike) and swim-run (Aquathlon) athletes. More than 40 athletes were recognized as a 2023 Athlete of the Year in five categories – Triathlon, Duathlon, Cross, Aquabike and Aquathlon. 

Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquabike and Aquathlon Awards include Male and Female categories for Open (overall), ages 15-19, Masters, Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters. The Cross Athlete Awards include an Overall Male and Female category. In addition, Multisport Lifestyle Awards and Coach and Race Director of the Year Awards were selected.

The award winners were honored at the 2024 USA Triathlon Foundation "Celebration of Sport" Gala, presented by TicketSocket on Sept. 12 in Atlantic City. The USA Triathlon Foundation Gala raised a record-breaking $215,000 to support the Foundation's mission of encouraging youth participation, inspiring pathways to access and inclusion, and igniting Olympic and Paralympic dreams. 

Seth Bohler (La Mesa, California) 

Bohler is an experienced aquabike athlete, both continentally and internationally. He placed third in the 35-39 age group at 2023 Multisport Nationals. Internationally, he competed for Age Group Team USA in Pontevedra at World Championships. 

Sarah Hess (Corning, New York) 

Hess shines on the world stage, placing second in her age group at the 2023 Standard-Distance Aquabike World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. On home soil, Hess podiumed in all six races, notably placing first overall in four of her races. 

Kieran Dolan (Atascadero, California) 

Dolan won the age-group title in Aquabike at Multisport Nationals. Additionally, he placed third overall at the Long Course Aquabike National Championships in Daytona. Dolan also had overall wins at March Triathlon Series, Goleta Triathlon and Tri Santa Cruz. 

Presley Lloyd (Wilmington, Delaware) 

Lloyd continues to dominate the junior racing group in aquabike, winning the Falcon Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike, Lums Pond Triathlon and Upper Dublin Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike. These first-place finishes in her age group earned her the No. 1 Aquabike ranking among juniors. 

Mike Shaffer (Ventura, California) 

Shaffer kicked off the year with a fourth-place overall finish in the standard aquabike at Multisport Nationals. He then represented Team USA, placing 10th in his age group in Standard-Distance Aquabike World Championships. He capped the year with a second-place finish in his age group at the Long Course Aquabike National Championships. 

Erin Byrge (Holly Ridge, North Carolina) 

Byrge had an impressive year competing in several aquabike races, consistently placing at the top of her age group. Byrge's five overall first place performances highlight her versatility and endurance across different distances and race formats, including Super Sprint, Sprint and Standard distances. 

Neil Semmel (Bear, Delaware) 

Semmel had 10 overall wins in 2023, including the overall win at the Michigan Titanium off-road race. He placed third in the 60-64 age group at Multisport Nationals in Irving, Texas and was fifth in his age group at CLASH Daytona. At his first two international trips with Team USA, Semmel placed 15th in the Long Course Aquabike race in Ibiza and 10th in Pontevedra. 

Monika Lukens (Hockessin, Delaware) 

Lukens raced in 14 aquabike races, earning a podium spot in all 14. Notably, she was first overall in five races, third place in her age group for Long Distance Aquabike at CLASH Daytona and was third at World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza, Spain.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Rick Kozlowski (San Diego, California) 

Also named the Triathlon Great Grand Master, Kozlowski is a master at multisport. A veteran triathlete, he placed first in the 70-74 age group at Multisport Nationals and at the San Diego International Triathlon. Internationally, Kolowski placed first at the 2023 World Championships in Pontevedra.

AQUABIKE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Michelle Case (Rockwall, Texas) 

Representing Team USA internationally, Case won her 65-69 age group at 2023 World Triathlon Standard-Distance Aquabike World Championships in Pontevedra. She also secured third place in aquabike at Multisport Nationals. 

Austin Tisch (Green Bay, Wisconsin) 

Tisch earned two wins in two aquathlon races in 2023, locally and internationally. He won his 30-34 age group at Multisport Nationals and won the age group world title at World Championships in Ibiza. A year prior, Tisch also won big — by proposing to the female Aquathlon Athlete of the Year, Kristin Doster. 

Kristin Doster (Green Bay, Wisconsin) 

The top-ranked 30-34-year-old aquathlon athlete in the U.S., Doster had a banner year in 2023. Representing the U.S. on the international stage, Doster won the world title in Aquathlon at the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza. In Irving, Texas, she won her age group at Multisport Nationals. 

Samuel Wen (Houston, Texas) 

An accomplished junior triathlete, Wen represents Team USA and placed first in his age group in three aquathlon races in 2023, including the world title at World Championships in Ibiza. 

Kennedy Rainwater (Brookfield, Wisconsin) 

Rainwater is a swimmer for NCAA Division I University of Illinois. She won her age group and finished second overall at Multisport Nationals, while winning the overall title at The Dam Tri. 

Walter Accessor (Little Elm, Texas) 

On his Texas home soil, Accessor finished second in the 50-54 age group at Multisport Nationals in Irving, Texas. Internationally, Accessor placed second at World Championships in Ibiza. 

Sarah Newcomb-Baker (Kingston, Massachusetts) 

Newcomb-Baker took fifth to lead Team USA at the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza. She won her age group at Multisport Nationals in Irving, Texas, and at Cranberry TriFest in Massachusetts. 

James Rolette (Tinley Park, Illinois) 

Rolette won the world title in his age group —and placed 12th overall — while representing Team USA in Ibiza at World Championships. He also placed second in the 60-64 age group at Multisport Nationals in the Sprint Aquathlon. 

Katie McCully (Eastham, Massachusetts) 

McCully won her 55-59 age group in the Sprint Aquathlon at Multisport Nationals. Internationally, McCully placed second in her age group at World Championships Ibiza, representing Team USA.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Steve Polley (Simi Valley, California) 

Polley is a 2023 All-American for aquathlon, placing first in his 70-74 age group in the Sprint Aquathlon at Multisport Nationals and first at World Championships in Ibiza in the Standard Distance Aquathlon.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 

Ruth King (Ambler, Pennsylvania) 

Earning two honors for her 2023 achievements, King took first in her age group in both the Sprint and Standard Aquathlon races at Multisport Nationals.
