USA Triathlon Board of Directors Member Gabriela Gallegos Elected as Vice President of World Triathlon, CEO Victoria Brumfield Among 3 Americans Selected for Committees

by USA Triathlon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon Board of Directors member Gabriela Gallegos (El Paso, Texas) was elected as Vice President of World Triathlon on Monday, Oct. 21 at the World Triathlon Congress in Torremolinos, Spain, and three Americans, including USA Triathlon CEO Victoria Brumfield, were elected to positions on World Triathlon Committees.

Americans selected in the 2024 World Triathlon Elections include:

Gallegos is the first multisport leader from the U.S. to be elected as Vice President of World Triathlon, which is the international governing body for the sport of triathlon.

“I am deeply honored to be elected as Vice President of World Triathlon. I am passionate about inclusion and expanding access to triathlon, and I look forward to working alongside leaders from across the world to continue growing and strengthening our sport, inspiring athletes from all corners of the globe, and driving meaningful change,” Gallegos said. “I’m excited to contribute to the global triathlon community and to help advance the goals that will strengthen and unite us as a sport.”

“We are thrilled to congratulate Gabriela on her election as Vice President of World Triathlon. Her leadership and dedication to the sport have been exemplary,” said Victoria Brumfield, CEO of USA Triathlon. “Her passion for triathlon, combined with her commitment to expanding access and growing the sport, makes her an ideal leader for the future of World Triathlon, particularly these next four years as we work toward the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games here in the U.S. We look forward to the positive changes her vision and experience will bring to athletes and the triathlon community worldwide.”

Gallegos has been a member of the USA Triathlon Board of Directors since 2018 and has served on the World Triathlon Executive Board since 2020. She is President and Race Director for Race El Paso as well as an attorney and Associate Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) School of Public Health.

She founded Race El Paso in 2009 to develop a culture of health and active living in El Paso, focusing on beginners and athlete education to encourage goal setting and active lifestyles. Gallegos recently passed the baton to new event directors who will continue Race El Paso’s annual running and multisport events, including the all-female Mighty Mujer Triathlon, which in previous years expanded into a series and has been televised live.

Brumfield ran as an incumbent and was re-elected to her position on the Audit Committee, while Palmquist was also re-elected to her position on the Paratriathlon Committee. Sylvia Borunda Firth will serve as a first-time member of the Legal & Constitution Committee.

The U.S. candidates ran on a platform centered on “Service Through Leadership” — helping to grow the sport around the world, while using the resources afforded to USA Triathlon and the U.S. multisport community to support fellow nations and member federations within World Triathlon.

The elected U.S. committee members are also passionate about supporting age-group athletes and multisport fans worldwide, while promoting equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the sport. They are focused on listening to the needs of the global community and the voices of elite and amateur athletes, federations, and partners.

In addition to the committee elections, Antonio Arimany of Spain was elected as President of World Triathlon, replacing Marisol Casado, who has served as World Triathlon President for 12 years. Visit triathlon.org for a complete recap of the elections.
