TORREMOLINOS, ANDALUCÍA, Spain — The 2024 World Triathlon Championship Finals Torremolinos-Andalucia kick off on Thursday, Oct. 17 as eight of the top U.S. elite Under-23 triathletes will race for world titles in the World Triathlon U23 World Championships.
WHO IS RACING
U.S. elite up-and-comer John Reed is the world's No. 2 ranked U23 men's athlete and comes to Spain with momentum. In September, he won his first World Cup race, in Karlovy Vary, and followed that with a 15th-place showing at World Triathlon Championship Series Weihai. In May, Reed earned his first World Cup medal, a bronze, at Huatulco, and followed that with a fourth place in Tiszaujvaros. His performances this season elevated him to the U.S. Elite Triathlon National Team.
Sullivan Middaugh, Ryan Luczak, and Nicholas Holmes will also mix it up in the U23 men’s race. Last month, Middaugh won the short-track title at the XTERRA World Championships in Trentino, Italy. In World Triathlon racing action, Middaugh won the Americas Triathlon Cup and Central America Caribbean Championships Punta Cana in August, following that performance with a second-place showing at the Americas Triathlon Cup Edmonton.
Holmes joined Middaugh on the podium in Edmonton, placing third, giving him back-to-back Americas Triathlon Cup podiums as he also finished third in Magog.
Luczak placed fourth in Edmonton and was seventh in his first World Cup race in Huatulco.
Four U.S. women will race in the U23 World Championships, and all four are current or former NCAA Division I triathletes. A member of the University of Arizona women's collegiate triathlon team, Lydia Russell won the Americas Triathlon Cup Edmonton in August.
Faith Dasso and Naomi Ruff race for Arizona State University, which has won seven consecutive NCAA titles. Their former Sun Devils teammate, Liberty Ricca, will also race in Spain. Together, the three were contributors for Arizona State's NCAA title in 2022.
