OMAHA, Neb. — The first full day of multisport racing at the 2024 USA Triathlon Multisport National Championships Festival Presented by Mutual of Omaha kicked off on Thursday, June 6, at Lake Cunningham in Omaha, Nebraska. Age group athletes competed in the Super-Sprint Triathlon Time Trial National Championships, Super-Sprint Duathlon Time Trial National Championships and the Aquabike National Championships.

The five-day event, which started on Wednesday with an open water swim competition, celebrates multisport’s diverse group of race formats. Athletes from all 50 states across the U.S. traveled to Omaha to compete for age group national titles in the following National Championships:

• Draft-legal Triathlon National Championships
• Duathlon (run-bike-run) National Championships (standard and draft-legal sprint distances)
• Aquathlon (run-swim-run) National Championships
• Aquabike (swim-bike) National Championships (standard distance)
• Super Sprint Triathlon Time Trial National Championships
• Super Sprint Duathlon Time Trial National Championships
• Mixed Relay Triathlon & Duathlon National Championships

Thursday’s racing action began with the Super-Sprint Duathlon Time Trial National Championships, as athletes started with a 1-kilometer run, then biked a 5k and finished with a second 1k run. The fast and furious race was won by duathlon expert and several-time-national champion Alex Arman (Boulder, Colo.) who finished in a time of 15 minutes, 46 seconds to capture the overall national title. Stephen Eles (Boulder, Colo.) finished second overall just 2 seconds behind, in 15:48, while Benjamin Drezek (Denton, Texas) earned the third overall podium spot in 16:05.

Michelle Christine (Leesburg, Va.) won the overall women’s national title, clocking a time of 17:38. Dominique Stasulli (Boulder, Colo.) finished second on the overall podium, capturing the 30-34 age group national title with a time of 17:51. Steph Popelar (Elizabeth, Colo.) was third on the overall podium and won her age 55-59 age group.

“The super-sprint distance is so fun and it’s a really tough challenge to go all-out on the short distance,” Popelar said. “This venue in Omaha is amazing and offers a really unique, scenic course. I’m looking forward to racing more this weekend.”

The Super-Sprint Triathlon Time Trial National Championships followed, as athletes raced a 200m swim, 5k bike and 1.2k run course. Jenna Haufler (Mill Valley, Calif.) won the overall national title in a time of 17:59, followed by her Working Triathlete club teammate Alex Leandri (Madison, Tenn.) who finished in 18:30.

Christine followed her national title in the Super-Sprint Duathlon Time Trial with a third-place overall finish in the Super-Sprint Triathlon Time Trial (18:43), winning her age 40-44 national title.

Jackson Harrell (Novi, Mich.) won the overall national title, cruising to victory in 16:10 to give Working Triathlete another national title. He was joined on the overall podium by Alex Ranum (Boulder, Colo.), in 16:35 and Zachary Tucker, 17:34.

Men’s 45-49 age group winner, Stefano Profumo (Santa Cruz, Calif.), shared a cool honor with his son: the title of age group national champion. The younger Profumo (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Alexander, won his 13-19 age group national title in the Super Sprint Duathlon National Championships.

“That is really special to be able to share that with him,” Stefano Profumo said. “We’ve had an awesome time racing together and we’re excited for more racing this weekend.”

The afternoon race sessions shined the spotlight on swim-bike enthusiasts in the Aquabike National Championships. Due to strong winds, the race was shortened to a 645m swim and 20k bike, which is about half of the standard distance.

Harrell won his second overall national title on the day, winning the Aquabike crown in 40:33, more than 1 minute ahead of his Working Triathlete teammate, Andrew Vanlandingham (Nashville, Tenn.) who finished second overall and won his age 40-44 national title. Mike Shaffer (Ventura, Calif.) was third on the overall podium in 42:45 and won his age 55-59 national title.

Stephanie Oechsner (St. Peters, Mo.) defended her 2023 Aquabike National Championships overall title, powering on the bike to finish with a time of 42:41.

“It went really well. I got out of the water fast and I got on the bike and crushed the hills,” said Oechsner who is racing the Aquathlon National Championships on Friday and the Draft-Legal Sprint Triathlon National Championships on Saturday. “I get a lot of wind practice where I live in the Midwest, so I felt that really helped make me more confident.”

Haufler was runner-up (45:52), winning her age 30-34 national title, while Elizabeth Vermann (Tucson, Ariz.) took third overall in 47:44.

In addition to racing for age group national championships, athletes also raced to qualify to represent age group Team USA at 2025 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships. With the opportunity to race multiple events over the four-day span, more than 100 athletes are attempting to race five or more events for the chance to earn the title of “Multisport Master.” Athletes crowned as Multisport Master will receive a special belt buckle and be honored at the final Awards Ceremony on Sunday evening.
