STONY POINT, N.Y. — The two-day USA Triathlon 2021 Long Course National Championship weekend concluded on Sunday in Stony Point, New York, with over 500 athletes competing for national crowns across three multisport events.

Sunday’s schedule featured title contention in long-course triathlon (swim-bike-run), long-course duathlon (run-bike-run) and long-course aquabike (swim-bike). The Long Course National Championships also included an international-distance aquabike (swim-bike), that was held on Saturday. In total, more than 650 athletes competed throughout the weekend in the four championship-title events.

This year, the Long Course National Championships, formerly referred to as the Multisport National Championships Festival, was paired with Toughman New York. Each race was held at Lake Welch in Harriman State Park.

The long course triathlon featured a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. Adoh Doherty (Taunton, Mass.), took the overall win for the men, earning his first national title. He crossed the line at 4 hours, 13 minutes and 38 seconds and also seized the 25-29 age group championship, finishing ahead of James Capparell (Wilton, Conn.) who was one of the few elite men competing on the day. Capparell took second with a time of 4:16:10.

Completing the men’s overall podium was Ryan Giulliano (Cary, Ill.), who finished in 4:22:22 and earned the 35-39 age group crown.

Another top finisher in the men’s event was Vincenzo Marchione (Middletown, Del.), who earned his third consecutive national title crown in the 40-44 age group with his time of 4:30:00.

On the women’s side, Anna Strehlow (Milwaukee, Wis.) claimed the overall title, completing the course in 4:55:20 to claim her second national title in 2021. In August, Strehlow won the women's national title in the Olympic-distance at the 2021 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in her hometown of Milwaukee.

Second and third place on the overall women's podium came from two women in the 45-49 age group, with Caitlin Drap (Yorktown, N.Y.) overcoming Anne Caudill (Glenview, Ill.) to take second place with a time of 5:31:14. Caudill then finished the podium in third at 5:37:27.

In the Clydesdale 40-59 age group, Stephen Maas (Barre, Vt.) won the national title in 5:22:17.

In the long course duathlon, Jeff Wilson (Akron, Ohio, M35-39), retained his national title he earned at the 2019 Multisport National Championships in Miami. He broke the tape for the men, covering the 2-mile run, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run course in 4:00:48, finishing over 17 minutes ahead of the next finisher.

Mike Mason (Stafford, Va.) was second in 4:17:05 and in the same age group. Robert Brinkley (Chattanooga, Tenn.) followed just 40 seconds after to take third in 4:17:45 and earn the 50-54 age group crown.

For the women, Jacqui Giuliano (Cary, Ill., F35-39) earned her first national championship title, finishing the duathlon in 4:41:31 and over 19 minutes ahead of second place.

Heather Melzer (Sewickley, Pa.) followed to cross the line at 5:00:46 and earn the 50-54 age group title. Karoline Muehlfellner (Dunedin, Fla., F35-39) completed the podium at 5:03:46.

Leslie Battle (Warwick, R.I.) won the Athena 40-54 national title, with a time of 6:53:12.

In aquabike racing, it was a big weekend for Amber Smolik (Oklahoma City, Okla.). After earning the national title on Saturday in the Olympic-distance race, she continued her streak on Sunday to claim the long course title. She finished in 3:14:57 to win the overall women’s race as well as the 35-39 crown, crossing the line seventh overall between both men and women.

Joining her on the podium was Christina Dorrer (Crownsville, Md., F45-49) who claimed the overall second place and first in her age group in 3:22:12, and Laura Mcdonald (Los Angeles, Calif., F35-39) who took third in 3:22:54.

The men’s overall win went to Kurt Holt (Santa Rosa, Calif.), who also had success in the Olympic aquabike on Saturday, earning the age group title for M45-49. He crossed the line at 2:51:21. Following soon after was Gary Cundiff (M55-59, Sandwich, Mass.) who finished in 3:05:20, and then Joris Esch (M45-49, New York, N.Y.) in 3:09:15.
