Nearly 70 U.S. age group athletes represented the red, white and blue in the Netherlands on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the 2021 World Triathlon Long Distance Championships Almere-Amsterdam and 2021 World Triathlon Long Distance Aquabike Championships Almere-Amsterdam.
Over 345 triathletes from 27 different countries lined up to crown the Long-Distance World Champions. Team USA had finishers in 13 age-group categories, with Monica Poveda (Miami, Fla.) claiming the sole podium for the U.S., earning the silver medal for the women’s 40-44 age group. She finished the 3.8-kilometer swim, 180-kilometer bike and 42.2-kilometer run course in a time of 10 hours, 10 minutes, 42 seconds.
World Triathlon Long Distance Aquabike Age-Group Championships
Almere also played host to the World Triathlon Long Distance Aquabike Age-Group Championships with 160 athletes from 15 countries competing over a 3.8-kilometer swim, followed by an 180.2-kilometer bike.
USA age-group athletes dominated the day, earning 15 total medals across all age groups.
Taking the world titles in their respective categories were Amber Smolik (F 35-39), Felicity Joyce (F 40-44), Kurt Holt (M 45-49), Maggie Riley-Hagan (F 65-69), Robert Smartt (M 65-69) and Rob Watson (M 70-74).
