USA Triathlon Nationals
Aug 3, 2023 - Aug 5, 2023 | National Championships | Milwaukee, WI, USA
Introducing USA Triathlon Nationals! #
USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships + Youth & Junior Nationals = the biggest weekend of triathlon racing in the country!
For the first time, the two iconic events combine into one, giving youth and junior athletes the opportunity to race on the same weekend with the country's top age group Olympic- and Sprint-distance athletes. Plus, the 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals racing action includes the PTO U.S. Open — welcoming the top long-distance pros in the world! It's all happening Aug. 4-6, 2023 in Milwaukee.
Registration is open now for USA Triathlon Nationals for all qualified athletes and non-qualification events.
Qualification is required for the adult Olympic- and Sprint National Championships, while most Youth and Junior races do not require qualification.

Age Group Qualification Standards#
Athletes aiming to race in the Olympic- and Sprint-distance National Championships at USA Triathlon Nationals must qualify at a local USA Triathlon Sanctioned event. There are several ways to earn that qualification.
You may qualify through any local USA Triathlon Sanctioned age group triathlon of any distance. These events include all non-championship events. To qualify, you must place in the top two or top 15% of your age group (whichever is greater). Placing via this criteria qualifies you for both Sprint AND Olympic-distance National Championships.
Additionally, any athlete who previously qualified for 2022 Sprint and Olympic-distance National Championships through an event in 2022 will automatically qualify for 2023.
Note: USA Triathlon will round to the next whole number for qualification calculations.
State championships qualify the top 35% or top five (5) finishers in an age group (whichever is greater). You may only qualify for Olympic-distance Nationals by placing in the Olympic distance State Championship race or Sprint Nationals by placing in the sprint distance State Championship race.
High School State Championships Exemption: All high school athletes who finish any of the State High School Championships will automatically qualify for Sprint-distance (pending they are at least age 15 as of December 31, 2023.)
Any finisher in 2022's Age Group Sprint, Olympic-distance, or Long Course Triathlon National Championships is already qualified for 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals.
Any athlete who competed as a member of Team USA in 2022 in any discipline will automatically qualify. Qualification cannot be met from participation more than one year prior.
Any athlete who finishes the triathlon race at 2023 Legacy Triathlon, held July 14-16 in Long Beach, California, will qualify for both 2023 and 2024 USA Triathlon Nationals.
In 2023, Clydesdale and Athena athletes will compete in their respective divisions for the championship races and will not start in age group waves. Clydesdale and Athena athletes will remain eligible for awards in their respective five-year age group and Team USA qualification, but will also be eligible for a separate set of awards placing just Clydesdale and Athena athletes per the identification noted during registration. Clydesdale and Athena athletes must also complete the weigh-in procedure, which will happen at Packet Pick Up prior to racing to remain eligible.
Clydesdale and Athena athletes must still qualify for Sprint and Olympic-Distance races per the qualification paths noted above.
USA Triathlon Nationals will retain open waves for a limited number of participants in the Sprint and Olympic-distance races. Open waves are a great way to experience one of the largest triathlons in the U.S. while not having to qualify. Open waves are NOT eligible for National Championship awards or Team USA Qualification. However, athletes who aren’t qualified at the time they register for the open wave but later meet qualification may transfer their registration to the qualified wave at the price difference, pending availability.
The 2023 qualification period runs June 1, 2022 to July 30, 2023. If you hit one or more of the qualification marks below, you've qualified for 2023 USA Triathlon Nationals!
Note: The qualification period for 2024 runs June 1, 2023, to July 30, 2024. If you earn a qualifying mark on a day that's in both qualification periods (June 1, 2023 - July 30, 2023), you've qualified for both years' Nationals.
Only individual-category participants qualify for Nationals. Elite, Relay, etc., categories will not.
Qualification is based on an athlete's age-group finish only
- However, if an athlete wins an overall award and is subsequently removed from their event's age group, they will be placed back into the age group for qualifications and rankings purposes
Qualification Ages
Olympic Distance: Age 17 by December 31, 2023 (can race at age 16)
Sprint Distance: Age 15 by December 31, 2023 (can race at age 14)
Qualification Process
If you have qualified through the above criteria, you will automatically receive the “You’ve Qualified” email from USA Triathlon. Your unique registration link is in that email. That link will be valid until registration closes.
If expecting a qualification email but it hasn't yet arrived, check your email that's associated with your USA Triathlon account, including the spam/junk folder. If it still hasn't arrived, wait at least 20 days before contacting USA Triathlon as race directors have 15 days after an event to submit results. Also note that:
- Athletes in your age group may have been removed for an overall award and placed back into their age group for qualification and rankings purposes.
- If you competed in an elite, open or relay wave at an event, you cannot qualify through that event. The only category you can compete in to qualify is an age group category.
- Events must be USA Triathlon Sanctioned in order to qualify for Nationals.
Youth Registration#
Youth athletes do not need to qualify in order to race at Youth & Junior Nationals - the age group and mixed relay races are open to all who meet the age requirements. Junior Developmental races do require qualification and the mixed relay requires invitation.
Youth & Junior Nationals is a non-drafting race for athletes ages 7-18.
Athletes must be entered into the age group that corresponds with their age as of December 31, 2023.
All athletes competing in the Youth Nationals must be current USA Triathlon members.
All athletes eligible for awards at USA Triathlon Nationals must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or

Any athlete who qualifies and registers to race as a Youth Elite is not allowed to race in the Youth Nationals . Athletes may not race in both races.

- No disc wheels will be allowed

Race officials will be observing the bike course from various points and recording race numbers of athletes who violate any of the cycling conduct rules.

- If your race number is recorded three times you will receive a 2:00 minute time penalty.
- If your race number is recorded four times you will be Disqualified.

Youth (ages 13-15) and Junior (ages 16-19) athletes qualify to compete at the 2023 Zone3 Youth and Junior Nationals (draft-legal) by finishing in the top 18 at any 2023 USAT Youth and Junior Development Series Race (excluding athletes already qualified and/or athletes representing other National Federations).
- Youth (ages 13-15) and Junior (ages 16-19) athletes qualify to compete at the 2023 Zone3 Youth and Junior Nationals (draft-legal) by finishing in the top-18 at ANY 2023 USAT Youth and Junior Development Series Race (excluding athletes already qualified and/or athletes representing other National Federations).
Note: Athletes may not register as both a Developmental and a Youth Age Group athlete (13-18). If an athlete registers as a Youth Age Group athlete (13-18) and later wishes to transfer to the Developmental division, USA Triathlon will transfer the registration upon the athlete’s request provided spots remain available in the Developmental race. Junior Developmental athletes must be between the ages of 16-19.
A password is required to register for the Developmental (draft-legal) races. This will be provided to you via email after you qualify.
Rules
This event is draft-legal. Youth Developmental must be between the ages of 13-15. Junior Developmental must be between the ages of 16-19.
Have Your Plans Changed?
We understand that sometimes plans change or injuries occur that keep you from racing. Because of the limited number of spots available in the Developmental fields, when an athlete withdraws from the race, we do our best to fill the spot through Wild Card requests. The sooner you notify USAT of your intent to withdraw from the competition, the better chance another athlete will have of taking your place. If you are not planning to race in Milwaukee, please notify nationalevents@usatriathlon.org.
Mixed Relay teams will be invited to participate in the mixed relay race via email. The field will be limited to 60 teams (240 athletes).
Race distances: 250 meter swim, 5 kilometer draft-legal bike, 1.2 kilometer run.
Rules
- Athletes must wear a team uniform that fully covers their torso from race start to finish. Matching team uniforms are highly encouraged.
- Wetsuits are not allowed if the water temperature is above 20°C (68°F).
- Athletes must move forward after the start signal (no lateral or rearward movement along the start line).
- All penalties will be assessed in the penalty box located on the run course and may be served by any team members currently on the field of play.
- Blocking or interfering with the forward progress of another competitor is not allowed.
- Aero helmets are not permitted. Helmet chin-strap must be buckled at all times while touching the bike.

Bike check-in for the Olympic-Distance National Championships will be from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4. Sprint National Championships athletes will check in bikes Saturday, Aug. 5 from 2:20 - 4:00 p.m. These times are mandatory for all athletes.
Transition will reopen at 4:55 a.m. race morning and close at 6:55 a.m. for all athletes on both days. Olympic-distance athletes will be able to check bikes out on Saturday at approximately 11:45 a.m. Sprint athletes can check out bikes on Sunday at approximately 10:35 a.m. There is no bike check-in on race morning.
No bags will be allowed in transition. The security of bags and personal items is the responsibility of the athletes, not USA Triathlon. There will be a secure bag-check tent, so please check your bag at the tent or leave it in your car or hotel. Athletes must have their wristband on to check-in and check-out your bike.
Bike Check-Out and Check-In Procedure for Athletes Doing Both Races
Bike check-out on Saturday, Aug. 5 is mandatory for all Olympic-distance athletes at 11:45 a.m. (approx.). For athletes also competing in Sprint distance on Sunday, Aug. 6, we have made the process easier for you. In transition, there will be a row of racks with no numbers. When bike check-out starts, athletes have one of two options:
- Remove your bike and gear from your Olympic-distance rack position and re-rack, leaving only your bike. Your gear must go with you. Once this is complete, you may choose to do one of the following:
- Return on Saturday when sprint distance check-in takes place from 2:20 - 4:00 p.m. and re-rack your bike in the rack position that has your sprint-distance number, OR
- Arrive on Sunday morning when transition is open to re-rack your bike in the rack position that has your sprint-distance number
- Remove your bike and gear from your Olympic-distance rack position and exit transition. You may then re-enter transition during sprint distance check in taking place from 2:20-4:00 p.m. and re-rack your bike in the rack position that has your sprint-distance number.
Please keep in mind the following notes if you are racing both Olympic-distance and Sprint races:
- You will have a different race number for each race. You must change out your Olympic-distance number for your sprint distance number on your helmet, bike, bib, wristband, and tattoos.
- So that race staff may identify your bike if needed, please ensure your bike still has a number on it if you place it on the racks without numbers (can be either Olympic or Sprint number)
- All numbers are unique to each athlete; there are no duplicates.
- The racks without numbers are located inside of transition area and will remain secured as with the rest of transition area.
- Additionally, please ensure you wear the appropriate swim cap for the appropriate day of racing.
For your safety, riding on the Hoan Bridge and I-794 is illegal and strictly prohibited. DO NOT attempt to ride on the Hoan Bridge or 794 which are south of the race venue outside of race days. USA Triathlon Nationals will be the qualification event for 2024's World Championships in Draft-Legal Sprint and Standard-Distance Triathlon both of which will take place in Málaga, Spain (official dates TBA).
Age-Up Rule
To determine eligibility for Team USA qualification, results will be considered based on the participant's age as of December 31 of the Worlds competition year. Therefore, all aged-up results for Team USA qualification at U.S Nationals will be according to the athletes' ages as of December 31, 2024.
We will post the age-up results at the KT Tape Team USA Lounge of each National Championship race and online post-event.
Example: If John Doe is going to be 49 years old by Dec. 31, 2023, he will age-up up into the 50-54 age group for the 2024 World Championships since he will be 50 years old by Dec. 31, 2024. Thus, for Team USA qualifying purposes, his time at U.S Nationals will be compared to the men currently in the 50-54 age group.
How to Qualify
- Sprint Triathlon: Top 8 per AG rolling down to 20th place. Please note the Age Group National Championships Sprint Triathlon is NON-DRAFT but the corresponding World Championships Sprint Triathlon is Draft-Legal.
- Olympic-Distance (Standard) Triathlon: Top 18 per AG rolling down to 30th place.
- Eligible Junior Athletes (ages 16-19 as of 12/31/2024) who compete in the 2023 USAT Youth and Junior Developmental Nationals will qualify for any remaining spots on the age-group Team USA in the 2024 World Triathlon AG Sprint Triathlon World Championship. Any athlete who is later named to the Junior World Championship Team will still be eligible to compete for that team. These athletes are not required to claim a spot at the Team USA Lounge.
Team USA Lounge
The Team USA Lounge presented by KT Tape is where all Team USA processing will be conducted at U.S Nationals. For athletes finishing in a qualifying place attendance is mandatory to claim a Team USA slot. If you are unable to attend, you must have a surrogate attend on your behalf to confirm contact details and interest. Athletes that are unable to attend will have their spot rolled to the next athlete.
Athletes finishing in a roll down place are not required to claim a spot at the Team USA Lounge and will be if they qualify via email later. However, if you would like to confirm contact details and interest at the lounge you are welcome to do so.
