Personal
McDowell grew up participating in USA Triathlon’s youth and junior elite triathlon circuit as part of the Chicago-based Multisport Madness Triathlon Team. He was USA Triathlon’s Junior Athlete of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and represented Team USA at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where he earned silver in the individual event and bronze in the Mixed Relay. He went on to win a bronze medal at the 2011 Junior World Championships. Later that year, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and took six months off to complete chemotherapy. A year later, he returned to elite competition, making his senior-level World Cup debut. He would go on to win gold at the 2014 FISU World University Triathlon Championships, and silver at the Pan American Games Toronto 2015. McDowell is now a seven-time World Cup medalist and recently celebrated 10 years cancer-free. He is also a U.S. Olympic silver medalist, earning second place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as a member of the Mixed Relay, which debuted for the first time in an Olympic Games. In 2025, McDowell transtioned to guiding for elite paratriathlete Owen Cravens.

2024: Started his season at the World Triathlon Cup Hong Kong and placed 14th • Placed 14th at the World Triathlon Cup Huatulco.
2023: Did not race due to injury.
2022: Started the season by finishing second at the 2022 Americas Triathlon Cup Sarasota-Bradenton in Florida on March 12 • Had a top-ten finish at the 2022 World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama in Japan, placing 10th on May 14 • On June 11 had a DNF at the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Leeds, England • Was a team member on the Mixed Relay team with Summer Rappaport, Taylor Spivey and Seth Rider and earned the bronze medal at the 2022 World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Montreal on June 26 • Placed 24th at the World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg on July 9 • On October 8 placed in the top-ten with 10th place at the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Cagliari, Italy • Had a DNF result at the World Triathlon Championship Series Bermuda on November 6 • Finished his year and placed 31st in Abu Dhabi, UAE at the World Triathlon Championship Finals on November 26.
