Personal

Mark Barr lost his right leg as a teenager due to bone cancer. Barr competed in swimming at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. During this time, he was also an NCAA Division I swimmer for California Polytechnic State University from 2004-08. After college, he still had an interest in swimming, but wanted to try something new so he decided to transition to triathlon. Some of his more recent accomplishments include being awarded the 2019 ESPY for Best Male Athlete with a Disability and being named the 2018 USA Triathlon Male Paratriathlete of the Year. Barr currently works as a registered nurse in the trauma surgical ICU, working multiple 12-hour shifts a week. He uses his days off to fit in training sessions for all three disciplines. His favorite professional sports teams are the San Francisco Giants and the 49ers.

Elite Triathlon Career

2024: Mark raced at the 2024 Americas Triathlon Para Championships Miami, qualifying him for Paris 2024 • He raced the next weekend, March 15, at the World Triathlon Para Series Davenport, winning his classification • Mark recently raced in Yokohama in the World Triathlon Para Series in May and placed first • Leading up to Paris, Mark placed second in the World Triathlon Para Series Montreal race • Mark earned his first Paralympic medal, a bronze, in September at the Paris Games.

2023: Claimed first place at the 2023 Americas Triathlon Para Championship Sarasota • Placed second in July at the World Triathlon Para Series Swansea • Claimed a fifth place finish at the World Triathlon Para Cup Paris in August.

2022: Mark made a statement at his first elite race since 2019 at the 2022 World Triathlon Para Cup Alhandra, placing third.

2019: Won the Sarasota- Bradenton CAMTRI Paratriathlon American Championships on March 9 • Earned a gold medal at the Tokyo ITU Paratriathlon World Cup on Aug. 17 

2018: Earned a 1st place finish at the CAMTRI Paratriathlon American Championships Sarasota-Bradenton on March 10 • Earned a 1st place finish at the ITU World Paratriathlon Series Yokohama on May 12 • Earned a 1st place finish at the ITU World Paratriathlon Series Iseo-Franciacorta on June 30 • Earned a 1st place finish at the ITU World Paratriathlon Series Edmonton on July 27 • Capped his undefeated season with a win at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Gold Coast, Australia, on Sept. 15
