Personal
Tamara Gorman got her start in multisport by entering a youth triathlon at her local pool in Rapid City, South Dakota, with her brother. She was a competitive swimmer growing up, so triathlon appealed to her. A few years later, Jenny Weber — the coach of Z3 High Performance Triathlon Team, a junior squad based in Des Moines — found out about her talents in swimming and running. She flew in to meet Gorman and fellow junior triathlete Tony Smoragiewicz, who also grew up in Rapid City. The following summer, Gorman competed in her first draft-legal triathlon. Even after crashing on her bike she still loved the sport and had a desire to continue racing. After completing her junior triathlon career, she took a year off in 2016 to run NCAA Division I track and cross country for the University of Minnesota. During the cross-country season in 2016 she was hit by a car, ending her season. She returned to triathlon in 2017 to win the ITU Triathlon Under-23 world title and earn her first elite ITU Triathlon World Cup podium in Salinas, Ecuador. She considers this to be the proudest moment of her career. Her biggest mentor is her brother because he has always been there for her and gives her great advice on how to stay mentally strong while competing as an elite athlete. She is inspired by athletes such as Bethany Hamilton (surfing) and Lindsay Vonn (skiing). Outside of triathlon, Gorman enjoys surfing, skiing, baking and listening to podcasts.
